FORAGE GRASSES

Forage grasses are the basis of many agricultural productions thanks to their high yields, adaptability, and ability to provide balanced forage. Used either alone or intercropped with legumes, they represent a strategic solution for improving productivity and the quality of animal feed.

Artigiansementi selects reliable and high-performance varieties, suited to different soil and climate conditions and cropping systems.

Avena Sativa

Sowing rate: 120-150 Kg/Ha

Sowing season: autumn and spring

Use: Pasture, hay, green fodder, grain

Among the forage grains, it is certainly the most widely used and versatile, given its numerous uses. It provides palatable forage with excellent nutritional value, very similar to Italian ryegrass.

Among the different varieties there are differences in the colour of the grain (white, black or red) and habitus (alternative or winter).

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)

Sowing rate: 25-50 Kg/Ha

Sowing season: autumn and spring

Use: Pasture, green fodder, hay (also wrapped)

Italian ryegrass is the most widespread and used forage grass, thanks to its great adaptability and rapid growth. It adapts to various soil types, but prefers deep, fertile, medium-textured soils rich in nutrients.

It is a microthermal species characterized by extremely rapid establishment, which allows for effective weed control even in the early stages of development. However, it is sensitive to prolonged drought and high temperatures.

Subspecies and characteristics

Italian ryegrass is mainly divided into two subspecies, which have different characteristics based on their growing cycle and climatic adaptability:

ssp. Italicum: non-alternative varieties, more resistant to harsh winters and also suitable for the creation of biennial lawns;

ssp. Westervoldicum: alternative varieties, characterized by rapid establishment and fast growth; in mild areas they can vegetate throughout the winter.

This distinction allows us to choose the most suitable variety based on production needs and climatic conditions.
