ANNUAL LEGUMES
Annual legumes represent a fundamental resource for modern agriculture, thanks to their ability to improve soil fertility, increase the protein content of forage, and ensure quality production.
Artigiansementi selects and offers reliable, high-performance varieties suited to different soil and climate conditions and cropping systems, offering ideal solutions for grazing, haymaking, green manure, and forage production.
Incarnate Clover (Trifolium incarnatum)
Sowing rate: 25-35 Kg/Ha
Sowing season: autumn and spring
Use: Pasture, green fodder, hay, green manure, honey production
An excellent forage legume, it grows to a height of 70-100 cm and produces abundant, high-quality forage. It is a cold-hardy plant that prefers loose soil and tolerates acidity.
It can be sown alone or intercropped with grasses, particularly Italian ryegrass, to achieve a more balanced forage. It provides a single, abundant cut in spring, while early autumn sowing ensures quality pasture during the autumn-winter period.
The main difference between the varieties concerns the vegetative cycle, with early, medium or late flowering.
Available varieties
Artigiansementi offers several varieties of crimson clover selected to guarantee high production and quality performance.
VITERBO
- High grazing ability
- Excellent productivity
- Excellent rebound ability
- Flowering period: very late
SANTANTONIO
- Good tolerance to the main plant diseases
- High digestibility of forage
- Erect posture
- Flowering period: very late
REDHEAD / KARDINAL

Alexandrian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum)
Sowing rate: 25-35 Kg/Ha
Sowing season: autumn and spring
Use: Pasture, green fodder, hay
An annual legume with a similar growth habit to alfalfa, it produces forage of excellent nutritional value and is also suitable for intercropping.
It prefers mild climates typical of Mediterranean environments, where it can also be used for autumn grazing. In northern and inland areas, spring sowing allows for two or more cuttings.
It adapts to different types of soil, as long as they are not acidic, proving to be a valid substitute for crimson clover in clayey and alkaline soils.
Available varieties
Artigiansementi offers several varieties of Alexandrian clover selected to guarantee high production and quality performance.
SACROMONTE
- Rapid development in late winter
- Tolerance to powdery mildew and low temperatures above average
- High productions
ALEX
- Nutritious and highly digestible forage
- Rapid and vigorous development
- Ideal for grazing in close rotations
TIGERS

- Rapid regrowth
- Good drought tolerance
Persian clover (Trifolium resupinatum)
Sowing rate: 15-20 Kg/Ha
Sowing season: autumn and spring
Use: Pasture, green fodder, hay (dry and wrapped), honey production
A taproot plant, it produces highly palatable, high-quality forage, with thick but tender, hollow stems. It is also suitable for companion planting in annual grasslands.
It adapts well to medium-textured and clayey soils, where it is preferred over Alexandrian clover for its greater cold-hardiness (even below -5°C). It is also highly resistant to the main fungal diseases, particularly powdery mildew.
Available varieties
Artigiansementi offers selected varieties of perch clover, designed to offer high production and quality performance.
RUSTY
- Excellent cold resistance
- Excellent regrowth capacity after grazing
- High nutritional value
CIRO
- Very broad leaves
- High cold resistance
- Prostrate-ascending posture
Squarrose Clover (Trifolium squarrosum)
Sowing rate: 30-35 Kg/Ha
Sowing time: autumn
Use: Pasture, hay, green manure
This species is particularly suited to Mediterranean climates, with good resistance to low temperatures. It prefers heavy, clayey soils, but can also adapt to sandy soils.
It produces a single abundant cutting in late spring, of excellent quality if harvested at the beginning of flowering.

Common Vetch (Vicia sativa)
Sowing rate: 80-120 Kg/Ha
Sowing season: autumn and spring
Use: Pasture, hay, green manure, honey production
A climbing legume used in annual grasslands to increase the protein content of forage. It is distinguished by its high digestibility and palatability.
It is generally intercropped with grasses that act as support. It has excellent weed-competitive properties and is widely used as a cover crop due to its high nitrogen-fixing capacity.
It does not tolerate low temperatures, so it is sown in autumn for grazing or in spring for the production of dry matter.
Velvety Vetch (Vicia villosa)
Sowing rate: 70-100 Kg/Ha
Sowing season: autumn and spring
Use: Pasture, hay, green manure, honey production
An extremely hardy species, it adapts to almost all soil types, including saline ones. It is highly resistant to low temperatures and can be used in a variety of climates.
Its fast and vigorous spring growth makes it ideal as a cover crop and for green manure. It is also a valuable catch crop in rotations with autumn-winter cereals, thanks to its high nitrogen content.
If harvested before flowering, it can resprout. It is often sown in association with grasses.

WHITE LUPINO v. LAGOPESOLE
Sowing rate: 160-200 Kg/Ha
Sowing period: November 10-20 in central Italy
An Italian variety completely free of bitter substances. It stands out for its high vigor and tall stature, making it highly competitive against weeds.
