SUMMER GRASSES

Summer grasses are macrothermal forage species, characterised by a production cycle in the warmer months and germination that requires soil temperatures above 16°C.

They represent a strategic solution for ensuring production continuity during the summer, when many traditional crops reduce their yields. While they generally provide lower-quality forage than spring crops, they are essential for ensuring food availability during times of greater climate stress.

The main species used are sorghum, pearl millet and panicum, which in recent years have also been joined by new experimental varieties such as teff and panicum maximum.

MOHA Panic (Setaria italica)

Sowing rate: 40-60 Kg/Ha

MOHA panicle grass is a summer grass characterized by a very short cycle and great speed of development.

Main features:

  • Short cycle (55-60 days from emergence to flowering)
  • Quick drying after cutting
  • Production of a single abundant summer cut

To obtain good quality forage, it is recommended to harvest at the beginning of earing.

Hybrid Multi-Cut Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor x sudanense) – SUZY

Sowing rate: 30-50 Kg/Ha

A highly vigorous hybrid, multi-crop sorghum is ideal for abundant and repeated production during the summer season.

Main features:

  • Rapid growth, can reach 3 meters in height
  • High leafiness
  • Stem rich in soluble sugars
  • Early cycle, also suitable for late sowing (until the second week of July)

Again, it is essential to avoid use in the early vegetative stages.

Sorghum gentile PIPER/SREM/BELLE

Sowing rate: 25-35 Kg/Ha

Sorghum is a summer grass appreciated for its ability to regrow and for its good productivity in conditions of intense heat.

Main features:

  • Thin stem
  • Quick recovery
  • High tillering capacity
  • Good nutritional values

It is important to avoid using it in the early stages of development: the crop should not be used if it is less than 50 cm tall.

Hybrid - non-hybrid pearl millet

Sowing rate: 15-20 Kg/Ha

Pearl millet is a particularly safe and versatile species, completely free of toxic substances at every stage of development.

Main features:

Highest quality forage and pasture

High safety of use at every vegetative stage

Excellent adaptability to summer conditions

To achieve maximum quality, it's best to harvest at the small-barrel stage. If grazing, it's important not to lower the height below 10-15 cm to encourage effective regrowth.

Single-cut sorghums

Single-crop sorghums are summer grasses characterized by a single production cycle, ideal for obtaining large quantities of biomass in a relatively short time. They are particularly suitable for producing forage, silage, or biomass for various farm uses.

These varieties are distinguished by their rapid development and ability to adapt to difficult climatic conditions, especially during the hottest and driest months.

Main features

  • High dry matter production
  • Single cycle with concentrated collection
  • Excellent adaptability to water stress and high temperatures
  • Good ability to exploit even marginal lands
